Complete Guide to Trex® Composite Cladding™

Exterior cladding puts contemporary curb appeal within reach for homeowners in need of elegant, worry-free armor for their new construction or expansion project.

Unparallelled Performance

Cladding is tested to withstand extreme weather conditions including hurricane-force winds. Cladding holds its color over the life of the product, whereas IPE wood weathers over time if left untreated.

Easy Installation

Apply cladding to your home's exterior vertically or horizontally to either a ventilated rainscreen or open-joint facade system, using conventional tools and methods.

Sustainable Style

Cladding uses 95% recycled plastic film and reclaimed sawdust, and is backed by our 25- and 50-year warranties.

What is Cladding?

Cladding is a construction term that refers to the process of applying one building material over another, primarily to add a layer or protection against the environment. While an important factor in weather resistance, cladding also improves the insulating properties and aesthetic appearance of a building.

A properly installed cladding system helps a building resist cracking caused by extreme temperature fluctuations, sunlight, strong winds and airborne pollutants such as mold. Cladding protects the material underneath from moisture caused by rain and snow and, with certain materials, can require less annual maintenance.

Trex Composite Cladding FAQs

How do you apply composite cladding?

With just 4 components that go into the application of the open-joint Trex cladding, installation is as easy as it is breezy. Once a water-resistant barrier and metal or wood furring strips have been installed, you’re ready to install the Trex cladding boards with one of the recommended fasteners. See the full instructions here: Cladding Install Instructions.

Does composite cladding need to be painted?

The unyielding shell of our high-performance Trex Transcend cladding—means it never needs painting or staining. The rich color and protective finish are engineered right into the shell, and the shell is designed to remain free of rotting, splitting, splintering, and insect damage for 25 or 50 years. Not to mention, painting Trex decking may void your warranty.

How long does composite cladding last?

Trex cladding is warranted for 50 years in a residential application and 25 years for commercial applications.

Is composite cladding waterproof?

While Trex cladding boards are manufactured for the outdoors, they are not waterproof, nor intended to be submerged in water for long periods of time. With the recommended installation allowing for an open-joint system in addition to the recommended furring strips – the boards will get the necessary drainage and airflow to perform as intended.

What is a rainscreen system?

A rainscreen is a ventilated system that sits lifted off a water-resistant surface of a building’s exterior wall.
